Black Cats
Black Cat Electronics was named for our two cats, Henry and Seven.
When we started to think about names for our business, we thought about using our names, using our son's name, and all manner of other names which just about drove us crazy!
We knew we needed something that sounded good, something to catch people's attention, something simple but effective - a tall order!
One day Jason sat at his computer, busy at work and concentrating. The cats, in their usual (as any cat owner knows) "pay - attention - to - me - NOW" fashion, leapt onto his lap and onto the desk and onto the keyboard, knocking over everything in their path and then scampered away. Jason sighed, picked up the things that were knocked over and said to himself, "My silly black cats!" And then it dawned on him - He came running down the stairs to the living room, looked at me like a kid in a candy store, opened his arms wide and exclaimed
"Black Cat Electronics!" We grinned, as we knew that this was the start of our dream, our own business. And Black Cat Electronics was born. Named for the cutest cats on earth. (see pictures!)
Henry, who is technically black and white (tuxedo print) was found by a friend of ours in his backyard. He was with 7 other kittens in our friend's backyard, but Mommy Cat was nowhere in sight. We gladly accepted him when our friend called to ask if we would. He is 5 years old now. He enjoys sitting in the windows watching the birds in the bushes, lying on his back (we call him the "sea otter") and sleeping on our bed.
Seven (named for her number of fingers!) is what is known as a "Polydactyl" cat. Poly means "many." Dactyl refers to "digits" or "fingers." Her paws look as if she is wearing mittens! These types of cats are rare, and all are linked to the cats who lived in Key West at The Hemingway House. They came on the ships from Europe - because of their extra toes they were able to grip the ropes and catch more mice onboard! When we first adopted Seven, we counted seven "fingers" on each front paw and 5 "toes" on each rear paw. Our Veterinarian soon discovered that she actually has EIGHT "fingers" on each front paw - and by the way did we want to rename her "Eight?" We stuck with the name Seven, and while clipping nails is an extra challenge, she has fit in well in our home. Her favorite things to do are stalk and attack her "older brother" Henry, sit in Jason's lap and drool (so much drool!) and purr and purr and purr - loudly. :)
Our cats were both rescued. We strongly believe that there are so many animals in need of good homes that it seems strange to "buy" one at a Pet Store. Our cats add so much to our lives and are very much a part of our family. Black Cat Electronics donates 20% of its profits to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) for the benefit of all animals.
